In essence, aromatherapy is a holistic healing treatment that uses essential oils to promote health and well-being. "The therapeutic use of essential oils from plants for the improvement of physical, emotional and spiritual well-being" - NCBI (National Center for Biotechnology Information) Where did aromatherapy originate? The word 'Aromatherapy' has been around since the late 1930s, a term invented by French chemist Rene-Maurice Gattefosse to describe the healing benefits of essential oils, but essential oils have been used therapeutically for thousands of years, and throughout history have been loved and cherished by the ancient Egyptians, Romans and many more ancient civilisations. In the early 1900s, after burning his hands badly in a laboratory accident, Rene-Maurice Gattefosse "took his bandages off and coated his skin with lavender oil", which to his absolute surprise, did wonders in helping heal the burn. After his experience, and being inspired by what had occurred, he began his extensive research into these amazing essences, and in the late 1930's he gathered his findings and produced a book called 'Aromatherapy', where he wrote about their properties and effects, the benefits they have on disease and illnesses, and so much more. This book has since been translated and illustrated but is still used today. You would usually expect to see these oils being used in a beauty therapy salon, a spa, or during a massage, but times have moved on and these essential oils are becoming readily available to all and loved by many. Although some can be expensive, these oils offer amazing benefits you won't find in synthetic medicines or fragrances. This reality cannot be ignored and has been handed down through the ages.
